Wednesday night was spent in the ER. Earlier that night Matt and I had church meetings we had to be at. Since we both have to be there that means Blake comes with us too. This particular Wed. Matt was running late from work and didn't have time to change out of his dress clothes before we had to leave. It had also been raining all day long. We started heading down the apartment stairs. Well, wet stairs and dress shoes didn't mix well poor Matt and Blake fell down the stairs! Matt did the best he could to keep Blake from hitting the stairs, but Blake still smacked his head. Matt and I both started freaking out. Our downstairs neighbors come out to see if we were okay. Matt wasn't hurt, but we were both worried about Blake. Luckily he didn't bust his head open, but he had a huge red mark on his head and he started to act really drowsy and wanted to go to sleep. I knew that wasn't normal because he had just woken up from a nap. Thinking back to my girls camp first aid training I thought I remembered that you shouldn't let someone who just received a head injury go to sleep (the nurse at the ER said that was just a myth, but I want a second opinion from you nurses that are reading this). We got him in the car and not to long after he started to throw up. This made me really nervous and so we decided to take him to the ER. After waiting forever to get in the Doctor said he had a concussion and that we should keep an eye on him. I happy to report that Blake is doing just fine and the next day you couldn't even tell that he had been hit in the head. Matt and I are both paranoid about going down the stairs while carrying him now!

Poor little Blake...and Matt! I have have the unfortunate experience of falling down stairs with a baby in arms so I feel for Matt. As far as it the ER nurse saying it was a myth to not let them fall asleep...I was taught in nursing school that you aren't supposed to let them fall asleep after banging their head. I think you are great parents and did the right thing!! It looks like you had a fun day at the water park! I'm glad it was the perfect day! I can't wait to check your blog and see the news of the new baby Backus!! You're getting so close!
Oh my gosh! How scary!! I'm glad he's ok now!!
How scary for you. That is like one of my worst fears of falling with Bekah in my arms. Glad he is okay.
Poor Blake. I would have freaked out to. That is why I make Piper walk down the stairs with me now. I am so paranoid about it! Sorry it happened, but at least he is ok!
I am not a nurse, but Tyler had a guy fall of a roof at work and they took him in the ambulance to the hospital. He was concust(is that a word)and they told him to sleep, that it was a myth. Glad he is all right!
PHEW! I'm glad everyone is okay!
How scary! I just imagine you in the ER all day with your 1 year old, and here you are 9 mos pregnant...Wow. I'm impressed that you remember any of that first aid stuff from girl's camp. I think I forgot it all the next week! I work in a pediatric ER a couple days a month and we tell the parents that the child can sleep, but to wake them up every hour or so to make sure that you are able to arouse them, and that things seem to be pretty normal with the child. No additional harm can be done by falling asleep. You just want to arouse them every once in while to a)make sure that there are not other signs of a head injury that you might be missing if they are asleep and b) make sure that they are easily arousable and just sleeping, and not semi-unconcious! I think you guys did a great job!
Better Matt than you... :)
